About Zygiella atrica (C.L.Koch, 1845)

Zygiella atrica is a species of spider belonging to the genus Zygiella. Similar to other species in the Zygiella genus, adult Zygiella atrica build orb webs that have two missing sectors, with a signalling thread running through the center of these empty sectors leading to the spider’s hideout. Young Zygiella atrica spiders, in contrast, build complete, fully intact orb webs. Unlike the related species Zygiella x-notata, Zygiella atrica is not found near houses; it occurs on bushes and in rocky locations that are far from human habitation. Zygiella atrica also has a browner overall coloration than Zygiella x-notata. The eggs of this spider are lethal to mice.
