About Zygaena rubicundus Hübner

Zygaena rubicundus Hübner is a moth species with a wingspan ranging from 27 to 35 millimeters (1.1 to 1.4 inches). A. Seitz describes this species as having all wings completely red, including the hindmargin. Only the apex and distal margin of the forewing bear a black edge, which measures just over 1 millimeter wide. It occurs in Central and South Italy, and is very local there. This species is endemic to mainland Italy, and is closely related to Zygaena contaminei. Its preferred habitats are limestone grasslands, mountain slopes, and open scrub that contain its host plant.
