About Zygaena romeo Duponchel, 1835
Zygaena romeo Duponchel, 1835 has a wingspan of approximately 35 millimetres (1.4 inches). The base color of its forewings is dark blue, marked with several red markings. The 4th red marking is drop-shaped, and large enough that it often connects with the 2nd marking. When it does not connect to the 2nd marking, the 4th marking is still much larger than the 3rd. Additionally, the apex of the forewings is rounded. This species is very similar to Zygaena osterodensis, but Z. osterodensis almost always has five red spots that flow together into two parallel stripes, and has a pointed forewing apex. This species is found in south and southwest Alpine regions, southern France, the eastern Pyrenees, and most of Italy. Zygaena romeo moths inhabit bushy forest edges with sparse grassland, at elevations between 500 and 1,500 metres (1,600–4,900 ft) above sea level.
