About Zygaena osterodensis Reiss, 1921
Zygaena osterodensis Reiss, 1921 has a wingspan of approximately 35 mm. The body and forewings are black, and the red patches on the forewings almost always run together to form two parallel stripes. The apex of the forewings is pointed. Mature caterpillars reach about 20 millimeters in length, and have a light gray-turquoise base body color marked with large black spots. This species is very similar in appearance to Zygaena romeo.
This species is distributed across continental Europe including Russia, with exceptions: it is not found in southern Iberian Peninsula, southern Italy, Greece, Great Britain, Denmark, or northern Scandinavia. Its range extends east to Asia Minor, the Caucasus, and Lake Baikal.
These moths inhabit lowlands and mountainous areas, occupying sunny forest paths and deciduous forests at elevations between 200 and 1,300 metres (660–4,270 ft) above sea level.
