About Zosteraeschna minuscula (McLachlan, 1896)

Zosteraeschna minuscula, commonly known as the friendly hawker, is a species of dragonfly that belongs to the family Aeshnidae. This species is found in South Africa and Namibia. Its natural habitats are ponds and still pools located in montane streams. It is a fairly large dragonfly, measuring 59–62 mm in total length with a wingspan ranging from 76–83 mm. Its thorax is brown marked with green stripes, and its abdomen is patterned brown and blue, with green eyes. It closely resembles two other dragonfly species: Pinheyschna subpupillata and Zosteraeschna usambarica. It can be distinguished from these similar species by the anchor- or T-shaped mark present on its frons. Male Zosteraeschna minuscula have a blue saddle on their abdomen close to the thorax, while females and tenerals have an amber wash across their wings.
