About Zoanthus sansibaricus Carlgren, 1900
Zoanthus sansibaricus Carlgren, 1900 is a species of zoanthid. It is generally found in the Indo-Pacific, and can also be found off the western coast of South America. This species has been recorded inhabiting both intertidal zones and areas deeper than 7 meters. It shows both phenotypic and morphological differences that correspond to the depth and shading of its habitat. Individuals growing in shaded areas have larger polyps than those growing in unshaded areas. This species can be split into three reproductive categories: male, female, and asexual. Observed spawning occurs in mid-July, and uses lunar phases as a timing indicator. Researchers theorize that different subclades of this species emerge depending on the time of year.
