It is native to hilly and mountainous areas at altitudes below 1,400 metres (4,600 ft), found in China (Hainan and Yunnan), India, Laos, Burma, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its fruit is berry-sized, and is called zunna berry, chunna fruit, or churna fruit in India. In the Marathi language, these berries are popularly known as 'Toran' (तोरण).
