About Zinnia angustifolia Kunth
Zinnia angustifolia Kunth can be an annual or perennial plant, growing up to 50 cm (20 inches) tall. Its stems produce many branches, and the above-ground plant parts are rough to the touch, covered in short hairs. Leaf blades measure 2–7 cm long by 4–8 mm wide (0.8-2.8 × 0.16-0.32 inches), and range in shape from linear to narrowly elliptic. The flower heads have involucres that are mostly hemispheric, shaped like a hemisphere, and are usually much less than 1 cm (0.4 inches) in both height and width. Wild plants have bright orange, or sometimes yellow, ray corollas, while cultivated plants may have white or other varied flower colors. There are two recognized varieties in wild populations: Zinnia angustifolia var. angustifolia, and Zinnia angustifolia var. littoralis (B.L.Rob. & Greenm.) B.L.Turner. This species has numerous cultivars grouped into three main classes. The Profusion series, a hybrid of Zinnia angustifolia and Zinnia elegans, produces flowers in shades of orange, cherry, double cherry, apricot, deep apricot, coral pink, fire, and white. The Star series bears orange, white, or gold flowers. The Crystal White cultivar produces white flowers.
