About Zannichellia palustris L.

Zannichellia palustris L., commonly called horned pondweed, grows in fresh to brackish waters across the United States (especially in Chesapeake Bay), Europe, Asia, Australasia, and South America. It can be recognized by its long, thread-like leaves and overall "stringy" appearance. It has long, tendril-like roots, and its seeds have a distinctive horned shape that gives the species its common name. The species epithet palustris is Latin for "of the marsh", which indicates the plant's common habitat. This is a diploid species, with a confirmed chromosome count of 2n = 24.
