About Xymalos monospora (Harv.) Baill.

Xymalos monospora (Harv.) Baill. is a species of evergreen tree in the plant family Monimiaceae. It is the only species in the genus Xymalos, and is commonly known as lemonwood. It is native to Africa, and is an Afromontane endemic. It occurs at elevations between 900 and 2700 meters. It grows in the Eastern African highlands stretching from Sudan to South Africa, and also grows on Mount Cameroon and Bioko in west-central Africa. Lemonwood is most commonly found in escarpment forest and regenerated scrub. When crushed, its leaves release a strong lemon scent. Fragrant yellow flowers bloom in spring. After flowering, small green capsules develop, which take approximately one year to ripen.
