About Xylota sylvarum (Linnaeus, 1758)

This species has the scientific name Xylota sylvarum (Linnaeus, 1758). For an explanation of specialized terms used here, see Morphology of Diptera. This insect has a wing length between 9 and 12 mm. Its thorax is blackish, its four anterior legs are partly yellow, and its abdomen is black with golden patches formed by adpressed golden hair. Hippa (1968) published an illustrated figure of the male genitalia of this species. Rotheray (1994) published a colored illustration of this species' larva. This species is distributed across the Palearctic realm: its range extends from Fennoscandia south to Iberia, and from Ireland eastward through Northern Europe all the way to Siberia and the Pacific coast.
