Xiphydria prolongata (Geoffroy, 1785) ranges from 6 to 18 mm in length. This species has a slender, cylindrical body form, with a rounded, highly mobile head positioned on a long neck, which are characteristics shared by all other members of the genus Xiphydria. It can be told apart from other species in the genus by the presence of a red band across the middle of its abdomen. The abdomen also bears white spots along its lateral sides. Female individuals of this species possess a rigid ovipositor.
