About Xiphidiopicus percussus (Temminck, 1826)
The Cuban green woodpecker, scientifically named Xiphidiopicus percussus, is a woodpecker species that belongs to the family Picidae and tribe Melanerpini. In Cuban Spanish, it is known locally as carpintero verde, which translates literally to "green woodpecker". This species is the only member of the genus Xiphidiopicus, and it is one of just two woodpecker species endemic to Cuba. It is the most widespread and common woodpecker found across Cuba. Its natural habitats primarily include woodlands, dry forests, wet forests, pine forests, mangroves, open woodland with palms, lowland moist forests, and heavily degraded former forest. The species has a stable overall population, and its conservation status is listed as Least Concern. It is endemic exclusively to Cuba, where it is extremely common across the island.
