About Xerophyta elegans (Balf.) Baker

Xerophyta elegans, previously classified as Talbotia elegans, is a plant species in the family Velloziaceae. This species is endemic to South Africa, with its natural distribution and habitat restricted to the Drakensberg Mountains in Mpumalanga province. It is an evergreen plant that, like other members of its family, can tolerate high levels of desiccation, and even long exposure to sulphuric acid. When wet conditions return, its leaves can revive and regain photosynthetic function. This plant produces long, narrow, leathery leaves, plus white star-shaped flowers with yellow stamens. Its seeds have hooks, a feature that improves dispersal by animals.
