About Xanthoria calcicola Oxner

Xanthoria calcicola Oxner is a crustose lichen species belonging to the family Teloschistaceae, and it grows on both rock and bark. It is distributed in the southern temperate region of Europe, with its range extending from southern Scandinavia south to the Mediterranean Basin. From Great Britain, its distribution reaches eastward as far as Ukraine and various regions of the Middle East. This lichen grows mainly on stone, but is also frequently found on bark. A study carried out in Sweden found that X. calcicola generally does not prefer trees as habitats, and only colonizes trees that grow close to an existing population of the lichen on a wall.
