About Xanthoparmelia plittii (Gyeln.) Hale
Xanthoparmelia plittii, formally (Gyeln.) Hale, typically reaches 4–10 cm in diameter. Its body is made up of irregularly shaped lobes that are roughly 0.5–2 mm wide. The lichen’s upper surface is yellow-green and covered in cylindrical isidia. Its lower surface ranges from pale to medium brown, with moderately to densely packed rhizines that anchor the organism to its growing surface. This species belongs to the Xanthoparmelia mexicana group, a complex of closely similar species that are distinguished from one another primarily by their secondary chemical traits. Most observations of Xanthoparmelia plittii come from North America, though it has also been recorded in South America and Europe.
