Xantholobus muticus (scientific name originally published as Xantholobus mutica by Fabricius) varies in body color from black to pale yellowish brown. Its pronotum is low and rounded, with a swollen section across the middle. Adult individuals of this species range in length from 7 to 8 millimeters. This species occurs across eastern and central United States and Canada; its range extends from Manitoba to Quebec in the north, and from Texas to Florida in the south. Xantholobus muticus is most commonly found in mixed hardwood forests, mainly in areas where oak (Quercus) trees grow. It can be encountered from late spring through early summer.
