About Xanthoconium separans (Peck) Halling & Both

The brownish cap of Xanthoconium separans is 4–12 centimetres (1+1⁄2–4+3⁄4 inches) wide and covered in dented pits. It has 1–3 pores per millimetre; the pores are white when young, turning yellow as the mushroom ages. The stem grows 4–12 cm tall and 1.5–3 cm (1⁄2–1+1⁄4 inches) thick. The mushroom's flesh is white, with a mild scent and mild taste when fresh, but develops an unpleasant smell when dried. It produces a brownish spore print, and resembles the species Xanthoconium purpureum and Tylopilus rubrobrunneus. This species grows on the ground in the eastern United States, and can be found from June to September. Xanthoconium separans is classified as a choice edible mushroom.
