About Xanthandrus comtus (Harris, 1780)
This species is scientifically named Xanthandrus comtus (Harris, 1780). For terminology used in this description, refer to the Morphology of Diptera. This species has a wing length unstated in the source, a wide abdomen with yellow markings, and a polished black thoracic dorsum. Males have round marks on tergite 2, and confluent marks on tergites 3 and 4 that form a deeply incised band. Females have oval marks on tergite 2, and square marks on tergites 3 and 4. Legs and antennae are mainly orange, and the pterostigma is long and black. Dusek and Laska (1967) provided illustrations of both the male genitalia and the larvae of this species. This species is distributed across the Palearctic realm: its range extends from Southern Norway south to Iberia, and from Ireland east through Central Europe and Southern Europe to Russia, the Caucasus, the Russian Far East, and the Pacific coast. It is also found in Japan and Formosa.
