It is native to North America and South America, where it grows in mats across the surface of calm water bodies like ponds. This species is an extremely small plant that lacks leaves, stems, and roots. Its visible green structure reaches up to 1.2 millimeters in length, has a flat surface, and bears a bump at its center.
