About Wolffia borealis (Engelm.) Landolt
Wolffia borealis, commonly called northern watermeal, is a species of flowering plant. It is native to North America, occurring in parts of Canada and the United States. This plant grows in mats on the surface of calm water bodies, such as ponds. It is an extremely tiny plant that has no leaves, stems, or roots. Its visible green structure reaches up to 1.2 millimeters in length, with one rounded end and one pointed end. A single stamen and pistil are located on the flattened top of the plant. Like other species in the genus Wolffia, northern watermeal is edible and qualifies as a nutritious food.
