About Whipplea modesta Torr.

Whipplea is a monotypic genus that contains only one species: Whipplea modesta Torr. This species goes by several common names: common whipplea, yerba de selva, and modesty. It is a dicot shrub or subshrub that belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family, and it is native to the Pacific Coastal region of the United States. The species was first recorded in 1853 by Scottish botanical explorer John Jeffrey, who found it in the Umpqua Valley near Mount Shasta, California. It was named to honor Lieutenant Amiel Weeks Whipple (1817–1863), an American surveyor and engineer.
