About Volucella inflata (Fabricius, 1794)

Volucella inflata (Fabricius, 1794) is a large, short-haired fly. While it is slightly smaller than most European Volucella species, it typically reaches a body length of 12–15 mm and a wing length of 11–13 mm. Its thorax is black with orange margins, and its scutellum is orange with light-coloured hairs at the apex. Its abdomen is mostly black, aside from dark orange-brown patches present on the second tergite. This fly has a very localized distribution across much of Europe. It can be found from Sweden, northern Germany, the Pyrenees, and northern Spain, through Britain and Central Europe, eastward into European Russia and the Caucasus, and also occurs in former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria.
