About Volucella inanis (Linnaeus, 1758)

Adults of Volucella inanis (Linnaeus, 1758) reach a length of 15–17 mm (0.59–0.67 in). This species has a predominantly black abdomen marked with three yellow bands, so it closely mimics the appearance of wasps. The first two of these yellow bands are completely or partially interrupted by a black wedge-shaped mark. Individuals have feather-like antennae on the head, and their wings bear darkened patches at the middle and the tip. This species is distributed across most of Europe, the eastern Palearctic realm, the Near East, and North Africa.
