It is an aquatic gastropod mollusk that belongs to the Viviparidae family, the river snails. This species is not native to the UK. It has a Palaearctic distribution across Europe and western Siberia, with recorded presence in specific regions: Great Britain (specifically eastern England), Netherlands, Germany (where it is listed as endangered, 3 gefährdet), Austria, Czech Republic (where it is listed as near threatened, NT), Slovakia, and Russia (specifically Sverdlovsk Oblast). This large snail inhabits slow-flowing, unpolluted rivers and canals that have hard water with abundant aquatic weeds.
