About Vitrea crystallina (O.F.Müller, 1774)

This gastropod species has a shell that measures 1.4–2.1 mm in one dimension and 3–4 mm in the other. The shell shape is variable, with 4 to 5 whorls. Viewed from above, the width of the final whorl is 1.5 to 2 times the width of the penultimate whorl. The umbilicus is narrow, much narrower than the umbilicus of Vitrea botterii, but it is clearly open enough to show the penultimate whorl. It is narrower initially, and only widens at the last whorl. This species is usually smaller than Vitrea diaphana, and larger than Vitrea contracta; V. contracta has more densely coiled whorls. This species occurs in the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Great Britain, Ireland, and other countries and islands. These snails live under leaf litter and the humus layer, under stones in moist forests, between moss, and in floodplains and swamp forests. They are also found in wet meadows, spring areas, and swamps.
