About Vitis shuttleworthii House

Vitis shuttleworthii House is a North American woody vine (liana) in the grape family. Its common names include calloose grape, bear grape, and the alternative name calusa grape. The common name calusa grape refers to the Calusa, a group of Native American people who lived in southwest Florida. This species is native to south and central Florida, and also has isolated populations in southern Alabama. It was first described in 1887 under the name Vitis coriacea. This name was already in use for an Asian plant, so a new name was created for the American species, which is now V. shuttleworthii.
