About Visnea mocanera L.fil.
Visnea is a monotypic genus of flowering plants that belongs to the family Pentaphylacaceae. The genus contains only one species, Visnea mocanera, a tree native to the Canary Islands and Madeira. Its fruits are called Mocan, and they are edible. The genus name Visnea was chosen to honour Gérard de Visme (c. 1725 – c. 1797), a French and English merchant active in Lisbon, Portugal. This genus was first described by Carl Linnaeus the Younger in 1782, and published in Suppl. Pl. on page 36. Visnea Steud. ex Endl. is a synonym of Barbacenia, a genus that belongs to a different plant family.
