Viola nephrophylla Greene, commonly called northern bog violet, Leconte violet, or kidney-leaved violet, has synonyms including Viola nephrophylla Greene f. albinea (Farw.), Viola pratincola Greene, and Viola retusa Greene. It is an annual or perennial forb belonging to the violet family Violaceae, and it is native to North America. This species was formally named by Edward Lee Greene in 1896, based on specimens he collected near Montrose, Colorado. Its specific epithet nephrophylla comes from Greek, meaning "kidney shaped leaves". It grows in habitats such as moist meadows and open woods.
