About Villa modesta (Meigen, 1820)

Villa modesta is a fairly large species of fly. Adults measure 10–14 mm in body length, and the entire body is brown in color. Sexually dimorphic abdominal markings are present: females have pale bands on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th abdominal tergites, while males do not have these abdominal bands. Males do have hair tufts at the tip of the abdomen and at the base of the wings. The wings are transparent, with a narrow brown stripe along their front margin. This species can be found active from June through September. It inhabits coastal dune areas, with a distribution covering mainland Europe, Britain, and extending northward into Norway.
