This species is a brood parasite, meaning it lays its eggs in the nests of another bird species called Jameson's Firefinch, whose scientific name is Lagonosticta rhodopareia. This species is also called the dusky indigobird, though this common name can also refer to the different species Vidua funerea. It can be found in Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Its natural habitat is dry savanna.
