About Viburnum carlesii Hemsl. ex Forbes & Hemsl.
Viburnum carlesii, commonly called arrowwood or Korean spice viburnum, is a flowering plant species belonging to the family Adoxaceae, which was formerly classified in Caprifoliaceae. It is native to Korea and Japan's Tsushima Island, and has become naturalised in Ohio, USA. This bushy deciduous shrub grows to 2 metres (7 feet) in both height and width, and produces oval leaves that are copper-coloured when young. In late spring, round clusters of red buds open into strongly scented, pale pink flowers. After flowering, oval red fruits develop in late summer, and ripen to black in autumn. The Latin specific epithet carlesii honors William Richard Carles (1848–1929), a British plant collector who worked in Korea. Two of this species' cultivars, 'Aurora' and 'Diana', have received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
