About Verbena urticifolia L.
Verbena urticifolia L., commonly called white vervain, has thin, rigid green stems that bear opposite, simple leaves. Its leaves are serrated, which gives it the specific epithet urticifolia because the leaves resemble those of plants in the Urtica genus. Small white flowers grow on spikes and open in summer; the white flower color is unusual for the Verbena genus, which typically produces bluish flowers. The fruit of this plant is a dark-colored capsule that contains many thin, brown seeds. The entire plant, except its flowers and fruit, is covered in stiff bristles. White vervain is native to eastern North America, and is not native to Mexico. It is most commonly found growing alone in disturbed areas that receive partial shade, and it prefers mesic habitats.
