About Verbena lilacina Greene
Verbena lilacina Greene, commonly called Cedros Island verbena, is a flowering plant species in the verbena family. It is native to Cedros Island and the adjacent Baja California coast. This perennial herb reaches 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide, with erect stems and narrow, elongated bipinnatifid leaves. Multiple cultivars of this species are available for garden use. In cultivation, Cedros Island verbena is hardy to zone 7 and needs low moisture. It grows best in well-draining soil, but can also tolerate heavier soils. The 'De La Mina' cultivar was selected by Carol Bornstein of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. It grows 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, and produces dark purple blossoms with lavender streaks and a light scent. The 'Paseo Rancho' cultivar was introduced by the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden. It grows 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, and bears fragrant light pink flowers streaked with purple.
