About Verbena canadensis (L.) Britton
Verbena canadensis (L.) Britton is a low-growing perennial herb that typically reaches around 1 foot (30 cm) in height. Roots develop wherever its stems come into contact with the ground, and over time the plant spreads to form a low mound. Its leaves can grow up to 8 centimetres (3 inches) long, are dark green on the upper surface and lighter green on the underside. Leaves are semi-evergreen, arranged oppositely on stems, and are pinnately-lobed. The flowers range in color from pink to purple, with a tubular corolla that opens into 4 or 5 spreading lobes. Flowering begins in spring and can continue through fall. This species attracts butterflies, rabbits, and deer. Its natural habitat is sunny locations including glades, forest openings, and bluffs. It tolerates dry conditions well. In some regions, the presence of Verbena canadensis indicates that a natural community is of high quality.
