About Velia caprai Tamanini, 1947

Velia caprai Tamanini, 1947 is an insect species whose adult individuals reach a length of 6.2–8.5 millimetres (0.24–0.33 in). As a member of the Veliidae family, Velia caprai resembles pond skaters from the Gerridae family, but has stouter middle and hind legs and an overall stouter body shape. In terms of ecology, this species has a chemical defense mechanism that often successfully prevents predation. It is so distasteful to brown trout (Salmo trutta) that any Velia caprai eaten by these fish is spat out without being damaged.
