About Vauquelinia californica (Torr.) Sarg.
Vauquelinia californica, commonly called Arizona rosewood, is an evergreen shrub or tree species that belongs to the rose family, Rosaceae. Its dark brown wood is streaked with red; the wood is hard, very heavy, and qualifies as a beautiful rosewood. This species produces dense white blossoms in early spring. Arizona rosewood is native to the Southwestern United States, where it grows in Arizona and southwestern New Mexico within Madrean Sky Islands habitats. It also occurs in the Peninsular Ranges of Baja California and northern Baja California Sur, and in Sonora, northwestern Mexico. Ecologically, Vauquelinia californica acts as a larval host plant for the two-tailed swallowtail. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant, and is used as a drought-tolerant shrub, hedge, or small tree. When trained to grow as a single-trunked tree, it can reach a height of 15 feet (4.6 m).
