About Vasconcellea candicans (A.Gray) A.DC.
Vasconcellea candicans (A.Gray) A.DC. is a small dioecious shrub or tree that can grow up to 8 meters tall. Its leaves are ovate or nearly rounded, with a slightly cordate base, an entire or sometimes sinuately dentate margin, and an obtuse or acute apex. The leaves are palmately veined, hairless on the upper surface, and hairy on the lower surface. Male plants produce small cymes that hold many flowers. The tiny flowers have a 5- or 7-lobed calyx and a 5- or 7-lobed corolla. Stamens number twice as many as the corolla lobes, and bear linear-oblong anthers. Flower color ranges from greenish to purplish. The fruit is ellipsoidal, turns yellow-green when mature, measures 10–18 cm long by 4–6 cm wide, and contains many seeds. The fruit of this species is edible. For cultivation, it is propagated from seeds.
