Varronia curassavica Jacq., commonly called black sage, is a many-branched shrub that reaches up to 3 meters in height and has a strong sage scent. Its leaves range from lanceolate to ovate in shape, measuring 40 to 100 millimeters long and 15 to 60 millimeters wide. Small white flowers grow in clusters at the ends of the branches; these flowers have a funnel-shaped corolla that is 4 to 6 millimeters long. The plant produces small, fleshy red fruits, each containing a single seed that is 4 to 5 millimeters long.
