Varanus scalaris Mertens, 1941 is a small species of monitor lizard. It is commonly known by two common names: the banded tree monitor and the spotted tree monitor. This species occurs in Australia, specifically across the states of Western Australia, Queensland, and the Northern Territory. It is also found in the Indonesian province of Papua, and in Papua New Guinea. Varanus scalaris inhabits trees within savanna woodland habitats. It forages for food both in trees and on the ground. Its diet is made up of insects and small vertebrates.
