About Valeriana saxatilis L.
Valeriana saxatilis, commonly called rock valerian, is a species of flowering plant belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family. It is a perennial, rhizomatous geophyte native to specific mountain regions across multiple European countries: the east-central and eastern Alps, northern Apennines, and southern Dinaric Alps. Its native range covers Albania, Austria, Germany, Italy, Montenegro, Slovenia, and Switzerland. Two subspecies of Valeriana saxatilis are currently accepted. The first is Valeriana saxatilis subsp. pancicii (Halácsy & Bald.) Ockendon, which has two taxonomic synonyms: Valeriana celtica subsp. pancicii (Halácsy & Bald.) Weberling and Valeriana pancicii Halácsy & Bald. This subspecies is native to the southern Dinaric Alps of Montenegro and Albania. The second accepted subspecies is Valeriana saxatilis subsp. saxatilis, which is native to the east-central and eastern Alps and northern Apennine mountains, found in Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, and Switzerland.
