About Valeriana celtica L.

Valeriana celtica is a plant species belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family. It is commonly called Alpine valerian and valerian spikenard. This species is endemic to the Eastern Alps (where the subspecies V. celtica subsp. norica occurs), as well as the Graian and Pennine Alps. It grows as a perennial herb that reaches 5 to 15 cm (2.0–5.9 inches) in height. Along with Valeriana saxatilis and Valeriana elongata, it forms a clade of dioecious plants. Until the 1930s, Valeriana celtica was harvested extensively for export to Asia, where it was used in perfumes. Its root has been used as a nerve tonic in folk medicine.
