About Vaccinium tenellum Aiton

Vaccinium tenellum Aiton, commonly called small black blueberry or southern blueberry, is a species of plant native to the southeastern United States. Its native range extends from southeastern Mississippi through northern Florida to southern Virginia. This species grows in forests and shrubby habitats at elevations no higher than 200 m (656 ft). Vaccinium tenellum is a deciduous shrub that reaches a maximum height of 80 cm (31 in), and it often forms large colonies. Its leaves are elliptical and grow up to 4 cm (1.5 in) long. The flowers are white or pale pink, cylindrical in shape, and measure up to 10 mm (3/8 in) long. Its fruits are very dark blue, appearing almost black, and are approximately 7 mm (1/4 in) across. The chromosome count for this species is 2n = 24.
