About Vaccinium cylindraceum Sm.

This shrub, scientifically named Vaccinium cylindraceum Sm., can grow up to 3 meters tall and is a hermaphrodite species. Its leaves are elongated, serrated, and end in sharp points. Apical shoots are bright red when they first emerge. The trumpet-shaped flowers are pinkish-white and typically grow in clusters. In autumn, its leaves turn reddish-yellow. The black fruit is a juicy, fleshy pseudo-berry. The cytology of this species is 2n = 48. In terms of distribution and habitat, Vaccinium cylindraceum Sm. grows on all Azores islands except Graciosa, at elevations ranging from 380 to 1,400 meters above sea level. Commonly called Azores blueberry, this plant flowers between May and June when cultivated. It requires acidic, loamy, well-drained soil, and can grow in either full sun or light shade. It can be propagated from both seed and cuttings.
