About Uvularia sessilifolia L.
Uvularia sessilifolia, commonly known as sessile bellwort, sessileleaf bellwort, little merrybells, or wild oats, is a species of bellwort native to eastern and central North America. It grows in woodlands in both wet and dry soils. Its strap-like leaves attach directly to the stem (sessile). This plant produces yellow, creamy yellow, narrowly bell-shaped flowers that bloom in spring. Leaf margins lack hairs, and leaves are somewhat narrow, traits that distinguish this species from the similar-looking Streptopus. It spreads asexually via long underground stolons, and most plants in a clonal colony do not produce flowers. Flowering individuals often do not produce seed; when seeds are formed, they develop inside three-angled fruits. The plant's native range stretches along the Atlantic coast from Florida to Nova Scotia, and extends west to Texas, the Dakotas, and Manitoba. Uvularia sessilifolia 'Blizzard' is a cultivated cultivar with misty variegated foliage.
