About Urticina columbiana Verrill, 1922

Urticina columbiana Verrill, 1922 is one of the largest anemone species. It can grow up to 25 cm in height and reach 1 metre in diameter. It has long, slender tentacles, and its column is red in colour. The tubercles on the column are large, rough, white, arranged in circular rows, and protrude out from the column. Unlike the tubercles of many other anemone species, these tubercles do not attach to ocean debris such as shell fragments. There are no specialized spherules on the outer edge of the oral disk, beyond the tentacles. This species is distributed in the Pacific Ocean, ranging from Vancouver Island to Baja California. It inhabits areas from the subtidal zone down to a depth of 45 metres. It typically lives among shells, in soft sand or mud, and is usually partially buried, with most of its tubercles located below the sea floor.
