About Urothemis signata (Rambur, 1842)
This is a medium-sized dragonfly species. Both males have red eyes, a red thorax, and a red abdomen. Their wings are transparent; the base of each hindwing has an amber-colored spot surrounded by a dark-brown patch. The male abdomen is blood-red, with black markings on the upper surface of abdominal segments 8 and 9. Females are similar in overall form to males, but are yellowish in color, and have the same black dorsal spots on segments 3 through 7. Juvenile and sub-adult males also have these black spots on segments 3 to 7. This species breeds in ponds and slow-flowing rivers, usually found in lowland areas. Males are often found perching on exposed twigs. The species has successfully colonized urban water bodies and park ponds.
