About Urania fulgens Walker, 1854

Urania fulgens, commonly known as the urania swallowtail moth or green page moth, is a day-flying moth that belongs to the Uraniidae family. This species was first formally described by Francis Walker in 1854. Its native range extends from Veracruz, Mexico, through Central America, and reaches northwestern South America, occurring west of the Andes and extending as far south as Ecuador. This moth is a highly migratory species, and wandering individuals have been recorded in Texas, United States. Urania fulgens is sometimes mistaken for the closely similar species Urania leilus. However, U. leilus lives east of the Andes in South America, is slightly larger in size, and has more white coloration on its "tail". At times, the two species have been classified as a single conspecific group. Like what appears to be true for all other members of the genus Urania, U. fulgens larvae feed only on toxic plants of the genus Omphalea.
