About Uloborus glomosus (Walckenaer, 1841)
Uloborus glomosus (Walckenaer, 1841) is a spider species that belongs to the Uloboridae family. It is one of only a small number of Uloborus species found in North America, and it is the only species from this genus found in Canada. Like all other species in the Uloboridae family, Uloborus glomosus does not have venom glands. Instead, it relies on cribellate silk, a fuzzy non-sticky silk, to trap and wrap its prey. This species shows different disturbance behaviors that depend on factors including time of day and whether eggsacs are present in its web. When disturbed, individuals may jump off the web, move to the web's edge, stay in the web's center, or jerk the web to shake it. Females of this species behave differently based on the presence of eggsacs: if eggsacs are present, a female will jerk the web, and if no eggsacs are present, a female will walk to the opposite side of the web.
