About Ucla xenogrammus Holleman, 1993

Ucla xenogrammus, commonly known as the largemouth triplefin, is a fish species belonging to the family Tripterygiidae. It is the only recognized member of the monotypic genus Ucla. This species is found in the Pacific Ocean, with a distribution ranging from Vietnam, the Philippines, Palau and the Caroline Islands to Papua New Guinea, Australia (including Christmas Island), the Solomon Islands, Fiji, Tonga, and extending eastward to American Samoa and Rapa Iti. It occurs at depths between 2 metres (6.6 ft) and 41 metres (134.5 ft). Individuals reach a maximum length of approximately 47 millimetres (1.9 in). The generic name Ucla was originally created by ichthyologist Richard Heinrich Rosenblatt in his 1959 unpublished dissertation completed at the University of California Los Angeles; the name is taken from the initials of that institution. The name was formally published and applied to this species by Holleman in 1993.
